Those of us seeking a healthier lifestyle know that getting on top of our diets is very important. Along with an active lifestyle this is one of the biggest things you can do to help improve your overall health.

A balanced diet is key for maintaining good health. It’s not very difficult either. Following just these 5 simple steps will definitely help you feel healthier.

Foods high in starch should make up about a 3rd of your plate. Try to go for wholegrain options as well as these release energy slowly which is better for blood sugar levels. Eating foods like potatoes with their skin on is also great as the skin of food often contains lots of good stuff. Add some veg and protein to that plate and you’ve got yourself a nice balanced, healthy meal!

Eating lots of vegetables and fruits is also very important as they are high in vitamins and minerals. Fruit is high in natural sugar though so don’t go overboard. The recommended 5 fruit and veg a day is what you should be going for.

Getting the right type of protein is also highly recommended. Avoid processed foods and aim for lean protein. If you are vegetarian or vegan you can still get enough protein in your diet, you just have to look closer at those labels and do some research. Fish is also a great option as it is very low in fat and high in omega-3 oils.

Lastly, you should be looking to lower your fat and sugar intake. You don’t have to cut it out completely but it should only make up a small portion of your overall diet.

The NHS has lots of guides so check them out or seek a professional nutritionist to help you create a diet that is perfect for you and your lifestyle. An important element in getting a better diet is making it realistic and doable for you. Don’t try and completely change everything overnight or you’ll find it too hard. I’ve had a lot more success making small changes at a time.
